Alberto Sampaio
Guimarães
The Alberto Sampaio Museum was created in 1928 to house the collections of the former Collegiate of Our Lady of Oliveira and other churches and convents of the Guimarães region, by that time owned by the state.
It is located right in the historic center, at the exact spot where, in the 10th century, the countess Mumadona installed a monastery, around which was springing up Guimarães town. The space it occupies belonged to the Collegiate, and has historical and artistic value: the cloister and medieval rooms that surround the ancient House of the Priory and the Cabido House.
It presents important collections of sculpture (architectural, figurative and funerary) covering the medieval and Renaissance periods and extending until the 18th century. The jewellery collection is one of the bests in the country: highlights include the Romanesque bowl of D. Sancho I, the image of Santa Maria de Guimarães (13th century), processional crosses, and the magnificent Gothic altarpiece of gilded silver depicting Nativity, dating back from the end of the 14th century.
It is also noteworthy for the tunic King João I wore at the Battle of Aljubarrota; 16th century mural paintings depicting the Beheading of St. John the Baptist; the collection of paintings, from the 16th to the 18th centuries; Mannerist and Baroque wood carving works; embroidered vestments; tiles and pottery.
